Progress Update on MGI’s Wood Meadow Project!

Mindrum progress report 600x340.jpg

As the countdown to our Global AGM in Rome continues, we’re excited to give you an insider’s look into our MGI Wood Meadow initiative!

Our trees will be planted at Mindrum Estate, a thriving example of regenerative agriculture in North Northumberland on the border with Scotland. This ambitious project is part of a 35-year strategy to convert the land into a diverse network of meadows, woodlands, and wetlands. These meadows are planted with a variety of trees to support both livestock and wildlife but do come with challenges.

Tom Fairfax at the Mindrum Estate recently explained:

“One of the challenges we face is trying to establish trees in grassland - the biology in the ground is suited to grasses not the trees. We are building wood chip mulch and inoculating it with microbes captured from old-growth woodland to help establish the trees. They will probably develop in 10 years time, but it's good to get them started.
"On top of this, these meadows are used by cattle and sheep, so the young trees must be protected. The results from recent trials of innovative tree guards are promising and they are proving to be cow-proof!

Your contribution counts

By attending the 2024 Global AGM in Rome, each delegate will be contributing towards the planting of a tree. In addition to this, over 30 members have generously chosen to donate towards additional trees. This means that MGI will be planting close to 200 trees on the Mindrum Estate! Thank you everyone for getting involved.

It's not too late: If you would like to contribute to the planting of additional trees, helping offset your AGM carbon footprint, contact [email protected]

Don’t forget your tree certificate at MGI’s Global AGM in Rome!

Each delegate at MGI’s Global AGM in Rome will receive a personalised digital certificate to acknowledge their contribution to this meaningful cause. We will be organising a plaque to be placed onsite once the trees are planted, showing MGI’s collective commitment to a greener planet.
